UM Harford Memorial, which admitted its first patient in 1912, announced it will close its doors on Feb. 6.

A statement from the hospital says its "aging facilities simply can no longer meet the demands of a modern healthcare system."

The day that UM Harford Memorial closes, though, a new, state-of-the-art medical center will open in Aberdeen, 6 miles and 11 minutes away.

The hospital will be moving services to the newly-constructed UM Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Aberdeen, and to the upgraded areas of UM Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air "for an overall expansion of services across the county," according to a statement from the hospital.

UMMS is investing over $260 million in expanded services, technology and facilities to serve the community in Harford County, the statement says.

"Our patients will benefit from the latest technology in both Aberdeen and Bel Air. In Bel Air, the expansion includes a new surgery center with integrated orthopedic and rehab services and a new patient tower with 72 inpatient beds," UMMS said.

The new facilities in Aberdeen include a dedicated behavioral health pavilion and a new emergency department with advanced technology and comfortable spaces. Emergency patients in Aberdeen who need to be admitted to the hospital will be transported to UM Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air.

The new Behavioral Health Pavilion on the Aberdeen campus offers inpatient behavioral health services. In fact, most outpatient services have already been transferred.
